Is it permissible to use cosmetic products?

Cosmetics are products used to improve cleanliness and appearance, typically applied locally to the hair, skin, nails, and lips.

Since ancient times, people—especially women—have paid special attention to personal care and appearance. In the past, people would color their faces, eyelashes, and eyebrows, curl their hair, and use fragrant oils instead of perfumes. These oils, which included animal and plant oils, essential oils, various resins, and dyes, served as perfumes.

According to Sharia, women are permitted to use cosmetic products only if the following conditions are met:

• It is permissible for a woman to use cosmetics to beautify herself for her husband or to look presentable in front of other women and close relatives. However, it is not allowed to adorn oneself with makeup in front of non-mahram men. A woman should remain covered and modest in the presence of unrelated men, so wearing makeup in such situations is not permitted.

• The cosmetics used must be pure, such as henna or kohl. It is not permissible to use impure substances, such as animal fat from carrion or any najis (impure) material. Sharia prohibits the use of impure and haram substances, as well as human body parts. Therefore, cosmetics containing proteins from non-halal birds or animals, especially pig fat or protein, or products containing a woman’s placenta (the organ that develops during pregnancy to connect the mother and fetus) should not be used.

• Cosmetic products must not be harmful to the body or skin. It is not permissible to use chemical products that cause harm immediately or later, as Sharia forbids self-harm. This is supported by the Prophet’s (ﷺ) saying: “There should be neither harming nor reciprocating harm.” (Ibn Majah).

• The effects of cosmetic products must be temporary. Permanent changes, such as lip augmentation, excessive tightening of the face, permanent tattoos, or altering the natural color of the skin, are considered sinful as they change the original creation of Allah.
