WHAT IS THE SIN OF USING PROFANE LANGUAGE?

Profane language (swearing, obscene words) refers to harsh, offensive, and vulgar words, especially those related to shameful acts or private parts of the body, which are strictly forbidden to use in Islam.

Using such language is considered inappropriate for a person of good character and faith. It damages dignity and modesty, and provokes anger in others. In fact, our Shariah instructs us to use indirect or polite expressions even for matters like marital relations, relieving oneself, or impurity. For example, in the Qur’an, the word for "sexual relations" is replaced with the more delicate term "لامس" (to touch, to be close) (Surah An-Nisa, 43).

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "Among the gravest of major sins is for a person to curse his own parents." Someone asked, "O Messenger of Allah! How can a person curse his own parents?" The Prophet replied: "A person insults someone else’s father, and in return, that person insults his father and mother (thus, he becomes the cause of his own parents being cursed)" (Bukhari). This shows that swearing and using foul language is sinful.

The Prophet (ﷺ) also said: "A believer in Allah is not a fault-finder, nor one who curses, nor one who is indecent, nor one who uses profane language" (Tirmidhi). This hadith makes it clear that anyone who considers themselves a believer should purify themselves from such ugly habits.

Another hadith states: "On the Day of Judgment, the heaviest thing on a person’s scale will be good character. Allah becomes angry with those who use foul language" (Nasa’i).

In traditional Kazakh society, those who used profane language or insulted others were punished according to customary law ("Kazakh Traditions and Customs" book, 2014).
