WHAT PRAYERS SHOULD BE RECITED DURING THE MONTH OF RAMADAN?

Ramadan is a month when prayers are accepted. During these blessed days, every Muslim should make abundant du‘a. Especially at the time of breaking the fast (iftar), prayers are more likely to be accepted. Therefore, making du‘a at iftar is mustahabb (recommended).

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Three people’s prayers are not rejected: the fasting person until he breaks his fast, the just ruler, and the one who is wronged.” In another hadith, the Messenger of Allah said: “The prayer of the fasting person is not rejected.” Regarding Ramadan, there are specific supplications to be recited when sighting the new moon, at the time of beginning the fast, at iftar, and during Laylat al-Qadr.

• 1. Supplication upon sighting the new moon. It is mustahabb for a Muslim to make du‘a upon seeing the new moon. In a hadith narrated from Talha (may Allah be pleased with him), the Prophet (ﷺ) would supplicate: “O Allah! Let this new moon come upon us with security and faith, with safety and Islam. My Lord and your Lord is Allah.”

• 2. Supplication at the time of breaking the fast. It is recommended to say: “O Allah! I fasted for Your sake, and with Your provision I break my fast. I believe in You and I put my trust in You. The thirst is gone, the veins are moistened, and, if Allah wills, the reward is confirmed.” According to a hadith from Ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him):

  “When the Prophet broke his fast, he would say: «ذَهَبَ الظَّمَأُ وَابْتَلَّتِ الْعُرُوقُ وَثَبَتَ الْأَجْرُ إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ».”

  In another hadith:

  “He would say: «اللَّهُمَّ لَكَ صُمْتُ وَعَلَى رِزْقِكَ أَفْطَرْتُ».”

• 3. Supplication at the time of beginning the fast (suhoor). “I intend to fast the month of Ramadan from dawn to sunset for the sake of Allah.” The recitation: «نَوَيْتُ أَنْ أَصُومَ صَوْمَ شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ مِنَ الْفَجْرِ إِلَى الْمَغْرِبِ خَالِصًا لِلَّهِ تَعَالَى». Another supplication: “O Allah! For Your pleasure, with faith in You and hoping for reward, I intend to fast the entire month of Ramadan. O Allah, forgive my sins and accept my fast!” Recitation: «اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي نَوَيْتُ أَنْ أَصُومَ رَمَضَانَ كَامِلًا لِوَجْهِكَ الْكَرِيمِ إِيمَانًا وَاحْتِسَابًا. اللَّهُمَّ تَقَبَّلْهُ مِنِّي وَاجْعَلْ ذَنْبِي مَغْفُورًا وَصَوْمِي مَقْبُولًا».

• 4. Supplication in the last ten nights of Ramadan and during Laylat al-Qadr. Our mother ‘A’isha asked the Prophet (ﷺ): “O Messenger of Allah! If I know which night is Laylat al-Qadr, what should I say?” The Prophet replied: “Say: ‘O Allah, You are Forgiving and love forgiveness, so forgive me!’” Recitation: «اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ عَفُوٌّ تُحِبُّ الْعَفْوَ فَاعْفُ عَنِّي».
