Are patients who use a urinary bag considered to have a valid excuse (uzur) in Islamic law?

Those who are compelled to use a urinary bag due to incontinence or other medical conditions are considered to have a valid excuse (uzur). According to the Hanafi school, such individuals should perform ablution (wudu) for each prayer time and may perform as many obligatory or voluntary prayers as they wish within that time with the same ablution. (See Kâsânî, Bedâ’i, 1/28-29; Merğînânî, el-Hidâye, 1/34-35)

According to the Maliki school, the ablution of a person with a valid excuse is not nullified by the entrance or exit of prayer time, but only by something other than the excuse that would normally break the ablution. (Ibn Rushd, Bidâyetü’l-müctehid, 1/41; Desûkî, Hâşiye, 1/114-118) If the condition causing the excuse puts the person in significant hardship and makes it seriously difficult to perform ablution, it is permissible to follow this Maliki opinion.
