Are women obligated to perform the Eid prayer?

According to the consensus of Islamic scholars, women are not obligated to perform the Friday and Eid prayers (Semerkândî, Tuhfe, 1/161,165; Halîl, Muhtasar, 45, 47; Ibn Rushd, Bidâyetü'l-müctehid, 1/167, 229; Sharbini, Mughni’l-muhtâj, 1/546). However, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) encouraged women to attend the Eid prayer (Bukhari, ʽÎdeyn, 15, 19, 21 [974, 979, 981]; al-Hajj, 81 [1652]; Muslim, Salâtü’l-ʽîdeyn, 1-3, 10-12 [884-885, 890]). Therefore, women may attend Friday and Eid prayers if circumstances are suitable.
