Can a person who fears missing the prayer time while water is available perform tayammum and pray?

It is not permissible to perform prayers such as Jumu'ah and obligatory daily prayers, which must be made up if missed, by performing tayammum out of fear that the prayer time will end, while water is available for ablution. If one cannot catch these prayers after performing ablution, Dhuhr prayer is performed instead of Jumu'ah, and the missed prayer is made up for the obligatory daily prayer. (Merğînânî, al-Hidāya, 1/29) However, if a person fears missing the funeral or Eid prayer while performing ablution, they may perform tayammum and join these prayers.

According to the preferred view in the Maliki school, if one fears that the time for an obligatory prayer will end while performing ablution or ghusl, even though water is available, it is permissible to perform tayammum and pray. (Nefrāwī, al-Fawākih al-Dawānī, 1/153, 154)
