Can a person with an excuse (uzur sahibi) lead the congregation in prayer?

A person who has an excuse regarding ablution (such as a chronic condition that breaks wudu) may lead others with the same excuse in prayer. However, according to the Hanafi school, such a person cannot lead those without an excuse, because the status of the imam should not be lower than that of the congregation. (Merğînânî, el-Hidâye, 1/58) According to the Shafi'i school, however, a person with an excuse may lead even those without an excuse in prayer. (Şirbînî, Muğni’l-muhtâc, 1/483)
