Can a traveler (musafir) lead the prayer?

A traveler (musafir) can lead both a congregation of travelers and a congregation of residents (muqim). Since a traveler performs the four-unit obligatory prayers as two units, when leading residents, it is appropriate for the imam to inform the congregation before starting the prayer: “I am a traveler; I will give salām at the end of the second rak‘ah. When I give salām, you should stand up and complete your prayer without giving salām.” This helps prevent confusion (Kāsānī, Badā’i‘, 1/101-102; Marghīnānī, al-Hidāyah, 1/81). Indeed, the Prophet (peace be upon him), during his stay in Mecca after its conquest, led the prayers in shortened form and said, “We are travelers; you should complete your prayers.” (Abū Dāwūd, Salāt al-safar, 10 [1229]). Similarly, when ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) came to Mecca, he led the four-unit obligatory prayers as two units and told the resident congregation, “People of Mecca! Complete your prayers; we are travelers.” (Muwatta’, Qasr al-salāt, 19).
