Can a woman lead other women in prayer?

According to the Shafi'i and Hanbali schools, there is no objection to a woman leading other women in prayer. Those who hold this view cite as evidence that the Prophet (peace be upon him) permitted Umm Waraqa to lead her household in prayer (Abu Dawud, Salat, 62 [591]; Ahmad b. Hanbal, al-Musnad, 6/405 [27324]; Bayhaqi, as-Sunan al-Kubra, 1/597 [1909]). According to the Hanafi school, although it is permissible for a woman to lead other women in prayer, it is considered disliked (makruh) (Mawsili, al-Ikhtiyar, 1/59).

If a woman leads other women in prayer, she should not stand in front of the congregation but rather stand in line with or among the other women (Abdurrazzaq, al-Musannaf, 3/140-141 [5080]; Ibn Qudamah, al-Mughni, 2/148; Ibn Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar, 1/565-566).
