Can Friday prayer be performed in open areas?

According to the majority of Islamic scholars, Friday prayer can be performed in mosques located in residential areas or in nearby open spaces. The Mālikīs, who require that the Friday prayer be held within a residential area, also state that it should be performed in a mosque. (Ibn Rushd, Bidāyat al-Mujtahid, 1/170; Mawwāq, al-Tāj, 2/520; Sharbīnī, Mughnī al-Muhtāj, 1/543; Kāsānī, Badā’i‘, 1/259-261; Ibn Qudāmah, al-Mughnī, 2/242-243) However, wherever the Friday prayer is performed, it is necessary to obtain permission from the religiously authorized authorities.
