Can missed (qada) prayers be performed in congregation?

Missed prayers (qada) can be performed in congregation, provided that the imam and the followers are making up the same prayer. (Merghinani, al-Hidaya, 1/59; Harashi, Sharh al-Mukhtasar, 2/39) Indeed, under the difficult conditions of the Battle of the Trench, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) was unable to perform the prayer on time; later, when circumstances allowed, he performed the missed prayer in congregation with his companions. (Muslim, Masajid, 205 [627]) In addition, while returning from the conquest of Khaybar, they once overslept at a stop and made up the missed morning prayer in congregation after sunrise. (Muslim, Masajid, 309 [680])
