Can names used for Allah be given to children?

One of the duties of parents towards their child is to give them a good name. Indeed, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) stated in a hadith that people will be called by their names on the Day of Judgment, saying, “Give your children good names.” (Abu Dawud, Adab, 68 [4948])

Names that are unique to Allah, however, should not be given to children in the same form. If such names are to be given, the word “abd” meaning “servant” should be added at the beginning, resulting in names like “Abdullah” (servant of Allah), “Abdurrahman” (servant of the Most Merciful), “Abdurrazzaq” (servant of the Provider), or “Abdulkhaliq” (servant of the Creator).

As for names from Allah’s “asma al-husna” such as “Karim, Latif, Ra’uf, Mu’min…”—since these are shared names that can also describe people other than Allah, they may be given to children as names. (Ibn Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar, 6/417)
