Can someone working in fields like health and safety perform only the obligatory prayers and skip the sunnah prayers?

The sunnah prayers performed before and after the obligatory daily prayers are regarded as acts of worship that prepare one for the obligatory prayers and compensate for any deficiencies that may occur in them. They are also considered a sign of following the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Therefore, it is recommended to perform these prayers as much as possible. Indeed, in some hadiths, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) stated that on the Day of Judgment, any deficiencies in a person's obligatory prayers will be completed with their voluntary prayers. In a hadith narrated by Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), it is said:

“The first thing for which a Muslim servant will be called to account on the Day of Resurrection will be the obligatory prayers. If he has performed them completely, it is well and good. If anything is lacking, it will be said: ‘See if My servant has any voluntary prayers.’ If he has voluntary prayers, the deficiency in the obligatory prayers will be made up by them. Then the rest of his deeds will be treated in the same way.” (Ibn Maja, Iqamat al-Salawat, 202 [1425]; see also Abu Dawud, Salat, 148 [864])

Accordingly, the regular voluntary prayers (rawatib sunnahs) performed along with the obligatory prayers should also be performed. However, those with significant excuses may, when necessary and provided it does not become a habit, omit these sunnah prayers.
