Can the final sunnah prayers of Dhuhr and ‘Isha be performed as four rak‘ahs?

The final sunnah prayer of Dhuhr and ‘Isha can be performed as either two or four rak‘ahs. There are reports that the Prophet (peace be upon him) recommended performing the final sunnah of Dhuhr as four rak‘ahs (Abu Dawud, Tatavvu‘, 295 [1269]; Tirmidhi, Salat, 317 [426-428]), as well as reports that he performed and recommended it as two rak‘ahs (Bukhari, Tahajjud, 29, 34 [1172, 1180]; Muslim, Salatu’l-musafirin, 104 [729]). However, since the reports indicating two rak‘ahs are stronger and more widely known, this has been preferred and is generally the established practice.
