Can the imam recite the iqamah?

Iqamah is among the sunnahs of the obligatory prayers. (Bukhari, Adhan, 2 [605]; Muslim, Salah, 5 [378]) Therefore, omitting it is disliked. Iqamah serves as a preparation for starting the prayer and is an act that announces the commencement of prayer. There is no restriction regarding whether it is performed by an appointed person, a member of the congregation, or the imam. Therefore, there is no objection to the imam who leads the prayer also reciting the iqamah. (al-Fatawa al-Hindiyya, 1/57)
