Can zakat be given to a poor sibling?

Zakat can be given to a poor sibling. The same ruling applies to nephews and nieces, uncles, aunts, and their children. (Ibn al-Humam, Fath al-Qadir, 2/270; Ibn Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar, 2/346) In fact, it is more virtuous to prioritize needy relatives when giving zakat. This is because it fulfills both the obligation of zakat and the duty of maintaining family ties (silat al-rahim). The Prophet (peace be upon him) encouraged this by saying, “There is one reward for giving charity to a poor person, but if one gives it to a relative, there are two rewards: one for charity and one for maintaining family ties.” (Nasa’i, Zakat, 82 [2582]; Ibn Majah, Zakat, 28 [1844]; see also Bukhari, Zakat, 44 [Chapter heading])
