Can zakat be given to an adopted (cared-for) child?

Although our religion encourages the care and protection of orphaned children, it does not recognize an adoption institution that creates legal consequences. (el-Ahzâb, 33/4-5) Accordingly, "adoption" does not establish a lineal (usûl-furû) relationship between the adopter and the adopted child. For this reason, a person may give zakat to a child whom they voluntarily care for and who is not of their own lineage, provided that the child is poor.
