Does bleeding caused by hemorrhoids break wudu (ablution)?

According to the Hanafi school, bleeding from hemorrhoids breaks wudu. However, if the blood does not go beyond the place it exits, it does not break wudu. If the bleeding is continuous, the person is considered excused and can benefit from the concessions granted to those with a valid excuse. (Mevsılî, el-İhtiyâr, 1/9) According to the Shafi'i school, blood coming from the front or back breaks wudu, but bleeding from other parts of the body does not. (Mâwardî, el-Hâwî, 1/199) Therefore, in this school, bleeding from external hemorrhoids does not break wudu, while bleeding from internal hemorrhoids does.

According to the Maliki school, bleeding does not break wudu except in the case of a valid excuse. (Ibn Rushd, Bidāyat al-Mujtahid, 1/40) Thus, according to the Malikis, bleeding from either internal or external hemorrhoids does not break wudu. If a person’s hemorrhoids cause significant hardship and make it very difficult to perform wudu, it is permissible to follow the Maliki opinion in this matter.
