Does vomiting break wudu (ablution)?

It is reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) performed wudu after vomiting. (Tirmidhi, Taharah, 64 [87]) However, this applies when the vomit fills the mouth. Vomit that fills the mouth—whether it is food, bile, or blood—breaks wudu. Phlegm, however, is considered like saliva and does not break wudu. The criterion for "filling the mouth" is that the vomit cannot be held back without difficulty. If a person vomits several times in the same place and the total amount fills the mouth, wudu is also broken. (Marghinani, al-Hidaya, 1/17; Mawṣili, al-Ikhtiyar, 1/10; Maydani, al-Lubab, 1/12) According to the Shafi'i school, vomiting does not break wudu. (Mawardi, al-Hawi, 1/199-200)
