Is it obligatory for women to perform the Friday prayer (Jumu'ah)?

The Friday prayer (Jumu'ah) is obligatory for sane, mature, healthy, free, and resident (non-traveling) men. Women, those whose freedom is restricted, travelers, and those who have a valid excuse preventing them from joining the congregation are not required to perform the Friday prayer. However, if they do perform it, their prayer is valid and they do not need to perform the regular noon (Dhuhr) prayer in addition.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Performing the Friday prayer in congregation is obligatory for every Muslim, except for a slave, a woman, a child, and a sick person.” (Abu Dawud, Salat, 214 [1067]). From the time of the Prophet until today, all scholars have unanimously agreed that the Friday prayer is not obligatory for women. (Ibn al-Humam, Fath al-Qadir, 2/62; Nawawi, al-Majmu‘, 4/483-484; Ibn Qudamah, al-Mughni, 2/250)

The fact that the Friday prayer is not obligatory for women is not a deprivation but an exemption for them. If they wish, there is no religious objection to their going to the mosque and performing the Friday prayer in congregation. In fact, it may be recommended for them to attend Friday prayers so they can benefit from the sermon and religious talks.
