Is it permissible to uncover and look at the face of the deceased after they have been washed and shrouded?

After the deceased has been washed and shrouded, it is permissible for their relatives and friends to uncover the face and look at them one last time or to kiss them. Indeed, it is known that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) did so when Osman b. Maz‘ûn (may Allah be pleased with him) (Abu Dawud, Jana’iz, 40 [3163]) and his son Ibrahim passed away (Bukhari, Jana’iz, 43 [1303]). Similarly, when the Prophet (peace be upon him) passed away, it is narrated in hadith sources that Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) uncovered his face, leaned over him, kissed him between the eyebrows out of respect, and began to weep. (Bukhari, Jana’iz, 3 [1241])

It is permissible for male relatives (mahrams) and women to look at the face of a deceased woman, but it is considered disliked (makruh) for non-mahram men to do so unless there is a necessity. There is no objection to women looking at the face of a deceased man. (Kasani, Bada’i‘, 1/304-305; Shirbini, Mughni al-Muhtaj, 2/46)
