Is it permissible to wish for death?

No matter how much hardship a believer endures, they should not wish for death. Hardships are also a part of the divine test, and those who are patient earn great rewards. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said in a hadith: “None of you should ever wish for death because of a calamity that befalls him. If he is overwhelmed to the point of wishing for death, then let him say: ‘O Allah! Keep me alive as long as life is better for me, and cause me to die when death is better for me.’” (Bukhari, Da‘awat, 30 [6351]; Marda 19 [5671]; Muslim, Dhikr, 10 [2680])
