Is there punishment in the grave?

One of the matters of the unseen, which cannot be known through the senses or reasoning but is established through revelation, is the punishment in the grave. This is known through the indication of certain verses (Mu’min, 40/46) and the explicit statements of various hadiths (Bukhari, Janaiz, 86). In one hadith, it is stated, “The grave is the first station of the Hereafter. Whoever is saved from that station will find the subsequent stations easier to pass. But if he does not survive it, the later stations will be even harder.” (Tirmidhi, Zuhd, 5 [2308]), expressing that with death, the life of the Hereafter begins. After a person dies and is placed in the grave, two angels named Munkar and Nakir will come to him and ask questions; those who have faith and good deeds will answer correctly, and the gates of Paradise will be opened for them and Paradise will be shown to them. Disbelievers and hypocrites, however, will not be able to answer these questions correctly; the gates of Hell will be opened for them and Hell will be shown to them. While disbelievers and hypocrites will suffer torment and distress in the grave, believers will live a happy and peaceful life full of blessings. (Tirmidhi, Janaiz, 70 [1071-1072]) For this reason, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) frequently prayed to Allah (the Almighty) for protection from the punishment of the grave. (Bukhari, Adhan, 149 [832]; Muslim, Kusuf 8 [903], Janaiz, 85 [963]; Abu Dawud, Salat, 152 [880])
