What is the ruling on Friday prayer?

Friday prayer is an individual obligation (fard al-‘ayn) for sane, mature, resident men who have no valid excuse. Its obligation is established by the Qur’an, Sunnah, and scholarly consensus. Almighty Allah says, “O you who believe! When the call is proclaimed for prayer on Friday, hasten to the remembrance of Allah and leave off trade. That is better for you, if you only knew. And when the prayer is finished, then disperse through the land and seek of Allah’s bounty, and remember Allah much, that you may be successful.” (al-Jumu‘a, 62/9-10). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also said, “Attending Friday prayer is obligatory upon every Muslim male who has reached puberty.” (Abu Dawud, Taharah, 124 [342]; Bayhaqi, al-Sunan al-Kubra, 3/245-246 [5577-5579]). Friday prayer has been performed continuously from the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) until today, and there has been no difference of opinion regarding its obligatory status.
